Core Duties
Duty 1: Daily Checks
Undertake “safe and effective” activities as instructed and actively record daily activity.

Duty 2: Biosecurity
Operate within strict bio-security practices.

Activities to cover:
- Implementing visitor policy. Maintain the cleanliness and biosecurity, of the working environment.
- Carry out a biosecurity audit of your farm and Identify and record the following:
- Areas where biosecurity is in operation (visitors, cleaning, disinfecting, appropriate animal treatments)
- Example of good biosecurity practice.

Duty 3: Housing / Bedding Up
Maintain a satisfactory environment for the animals
Duty 3 Details
Activities to cover:
- An overview of livestock housing and how it allows natural behaviour (linked to the Five Needs).
- Daily housing checks, including water availability.
- Monitoring of environmental conditions (temperature, airflow, light, etc.).
- Cleaning routines and manure management practices.
- Bedding up β type of bedding and how it’s maintained.
- Use of technology in housing (e.g. temperature control, ventilation systems, fans).
Duty 4: Restraining Handling Transport Livestock
Restrain and handle animals in a safe and appropriate manner.

Activities to cover:
- RESTRAINING and handling LIVESTOCK in a safe and appropriate manner.
- MOVING and handling LIVESTOCK in a safe and appropriate manner
- RECORDS involved with either or both of these activities. Movement or vaccination records for example. This can be a separate entry or included on the above entries
- PLANNING COMMUNICATING AND TEAMWORK Explain how these tasks were planned, how everyone would work as a team and how this was communicated to those in the team
Duty 5: Operate a Vehicle
Operate agricultural vehicles relevant to the business safely, legally and in line with current legislation.

- Rules and training to Legally Operate a farm vehicle
- Prepare and operate other machinery and equipment for safe and effective use
Duty 6: Environmental Management
Recognise environmental risk and carry out operations to minimise environmental impact.

Activities to cover:
- How activities are taken to avoid pollution of soil, air and water courses.
- Check and maintain field boundaries
- Carry out an audit of your farm and Identify and record the following:
- 3 risks to soil, air, or water
- 2 examples of good environmental practice.
- 1 improvement action you could take
Duty 7: Crop / Forage Storage
Prepare and maintain crop/forage storage as instructed. Including monitoring pests and vermin in crop or bulk bins and temperature monitoring.

Activities to cover:
- CROP STORAGE & MONITORING – Prepare/maintain crop/forage storage (pest control, temperature monitoring).
- CROPS, GRASS & FORAGE – Monitoring any / all of these for growth, health and sward / crop maintenance
- CROPS, GRASS & FORAGE – Selecting for grazing / forage production / harvest
Duty 8: Farm Infrastructure
Monitor and maintain farm infrastructure, machinery and non-production areas as instructed.

Activities to cover:
- Any maintenance and repairing jobs you do around farm.
- Checking oil in farm machinery
- Fences
- Water Troughs
- Gates
- Cattle Crush
- General Building maintenance β cleaning drains out, tidying yard etc
Duty 9: Waste Management
Implement effective storage and disposal of waste in accordance with regulation.

- How chemicals, sharps, organic and non-organic waste are dealt with.
- Carry out a short audit at your farm and identify and record the following:
- Waste management of 2 different types of waste
- An example of good waste management.
- 1 improvement action you could take
Livestock Pathway
Duty 10: Livestock Health & Welfare
Carry out routine health and welfare checks on livestock and report on health and production performance when this is abnormal.
Duty 10 Details
Activities to cover:
- Administration of routine treatments, under supervision and engaging with third parties such as vets
- How animal welfare requirements are met
- Signs of health and, or ill health in livestock (cattle: beef and dairy, pigs, sheep and goats). The zoonotic, non-zoonotic and notifiable diseases (for example, BSE) and their impact on human health
- Assisting with treatments when appropriate.
Duty 11: Grazing & Forage Production
Monitor and select grass for either grazing or forage production- recognising and reporting on the growth, health and maintenance of a chosen grassland sward. Linked to Duty 7 above and 15 below

- CROP STORAGE & MONITORING – Prepare/maintain crop/forage storage (pest control, temperature monitoring).
- CROPS, GRASS & FORAGE – Monitoring any / all of these for growth, health and sward / crop maintenance

Duty 12: Feed & Water Livestock
Feed Animals as per instruction and ensuring fresh water is always accessible.

Activities to cover:
- An explanation of the different feeds used and available on your farm and how these are checked and kept free from contamination and spoiling
- Feeding and watering livestock β at different stages of production and reproductive cycle
- Any issues encountered during daily feeding and checking and what you did about them.
- Any health and safety or environmental issues which may occur or be linked to feeding.
Duty 13: Livestock Gestation & Birth
Monitor animals prior to, during and post parturition, assisting with associated husbandry tasks.

Activities to cover:
- BREEDING AND MATING OF LIVESTOCK β including selecting suitable breeding stock and signs of heat or oestrus.
- CARE OF PREGNANT LIVESTOCK
- PARTURITION – Livestock at, just after or around birth
- NEWBORN CARE – Care of newborn livestock, including any routine treatments and tasks carried out
- FEEDING through to weaning of newborn livestock (remember weaning means taking off milk not just separating from mother)
- RECORDS AND TECHNOLOGY involved with mating, pregnant livestock and newborn livestock.
Duty 14: Livestock Breeding & Mating
Perform relevant stock breeding related tasks under instruction; selection of animals, identification of signs of heat, assisting with service duties Linked to Duty 13

Activities to cover:
- BREEDING AND MATING OF LIVESTOCK β including selecting suitable breeding stock and signs of heat or oestrus.
- CARE OF PREGNANT LIVESTOCK
- PARTURITION – Livestock at, just after or around birth
- NEWBORN CARE – Care of newborn livestock, including any routine treatments and tasks carried out
- FEEDING through to weaning of newborn livestock (remember weaning means taking off milk not just separating from mother)
- RECORDS AND TECHNOLOGY involved with mating, pregnant livestock and newborn livestock.
Crop Pathway
Duty 15: Crop & Forage Operations
Perform crop and or forage operations as per instruction.

Duty 16: Crop Monitoring
Recognise and record (verbally and written) the growth and health of crops

Activities to cover:
- Assist with Crop Monitoring by walking several crops at different stages throughout the year both alone and with employer/agronomist
Duty 17: Crop Establishment
Assist with preparation and planting of field scale crops.

Activities to cover:
- Record of several field activities linked to growing a crop: cultivation, nutrient application, harvesting activities for example
Duty 18: Load / Unload Transport Crops & Supplies
Safely load, unload and transport harvested crops in accordance with legislation and codes of practice

Activities to cover:
- SAFELY LOAD, UNLOAD and TRANSPORT (in accordance with legislation and codes of practice)
- HARVESTED CROPS
- FEEDSTUFFS
- OTHER RESOURCES
- RECORDS involved with these activities. (Weight Tickets, Grain Passports etc) This can be a separate entry or included in the above entries
Duty 19: Crop Quality
Recognise good and poor quality in growing, harvested and stored crops.
